As a Fiber Construction Technician, you'll play a vital role in the broadband construction process, operating heavy equipment, splicing and terminating fiber optic cables, and maintaining outside plant (OSP) facilities. You will be involved in the installation and repair of various communication equipment, including residential and business systems, digital TV, data installations, home networking, and WiFi.

This role involves both inside and outside environmental conditions with occasional exposure to extreme heat and cold, noise, and atmospheric conditions. Irregular working hours may be required during "On Call" coverage rotation.


Responsibilities:

  • Assist in all phases of broadband construction, utilizing heavy equipment operation such as directional drilling, excavators, vacuum excavators, cable plows, and trenchers.
  • Identify and prepare fiber strands and copper cable pairs for splicing or termination.
  • Maintain OSP facilities by testing, repairing, and replacing defective sections using splicing techniques.
  • Test and terminate fiber cable, connecting OSP distribution fibers to Central Office Equipment (COE) through fusion splicing.
  • Mount terminal boxes, attach individual house or service cable pairs, and tie them to terminal blocks at demarcation points.
  • Perform testing on completed splices or terminations to ensure dependable service.
  • Support cable, splice closures, and distribution stubs as needed.
  • Work with awareness of safety hazards associated with outside plant facilities construction and maintenance.

Skills/Must Have:

  • High school diploma required. Experience or training in telecommunications plant operations beneficial.
  • Skill in operating various heavy machinery and construction equipment.
  • Understanding of cable technology, including fiber optics.
  • Knowledge of plant operations, cable records, standards, and splicing techniques and equipment.
  • Basic electronics and digital technology understanding.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures and test equipment.
  • Understanding of home and small business networking installation and operation is a plus.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations.
  • Ability to interpret documents such as maps, staking sheets, and operating manuals.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 90 days.
