Join a leading AI Cloud Service Provider delivering large-scale GPU clusters for AI training and inference through a vertically integrated platform of grid-connected land and data centers in renewable-rich regions across the US and Canada.

The company is looking for a High Voltage Design Engineer to act as the Owner’s representative for the design of high and medium voltage substation infrastructure across its Canadian data centre portfolio. The role involves working with utilities, EPCs, and internal stakeholders to deliver standardised, scalable, and highly reliable substation solutions. This is an opportunity to take ownership of substation design across a growing portfolio of greenfield and brownfield projects and help shape the standards supporting the business’s continued growth.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and review the detailed design of HV/MV substations (typically 12kV to 287kV), including one-line diagrams, protection philosophies, switchyard layouts, grounding/lightning protection and AC/DC auxiliary systems
  • Perform and/or review engineering studies, including short circuit, load flow, grounding, insulation coordination and equipment duty
  • Develop and maintain standardized substation design templates to support rapid deployment of data center campuses
  • Act as Owner's Engineer, overseeing external engineering consultants and EPC contractors, and reviewing and approving deliverables, calculations, drawings and specifications
  • Support value engineering and constructability reviews, develop technical specifications for major substation equipment, and support procurement activities including technical bid evaluations
  • Provide engineering support through construction, Factory and Site Acceptance Testing, commissioning and energization, including site visits and coordination across civil, structural, P&C and SCADA disciplines


Skills/Must Have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred)
  • 7-10 years' progressive experience in substation engineering, ideally with hands-on detailed design experience from a consulting/engineering firm or utility environment
  • Proven track record delivering substation projects from concept through construction and commissioning
  • Strong knowledge of substation physical design, grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination and protection & control
  • Familiarity with engineering tools such as ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, PSSE or CDEGS an asset
  • Strong understanding of applicable Canadian codes and industry/utility standards, with excellent communication skills across utilities, contractors and internal stakeholders
