The organization is currently on the lookout for a Resident Engineer to provide high-level technical expertise for a strategic customer in Melbourne CBD. The ideal candidate will take ownership of complex technical issues across DWDM, OTN, ROADM, photonics, and optical transport networks, working with technologies such as 6500, RLS, and Waveserver to drive incidents through to resolution and influence network performance and product improvements.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for a strategic customer, owning complex technical issues from initial investigation through to resolution.
  • Provide hands-on and remote technical support across high-speed optical transport and network management infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot and isolate complex faults across DWDM, OTN, ROADM, photonics, fibre and transport systems.
  • Support and troubleshoot platforms including OME 6500, RLS and Waveserver.
  • Analyse network performance, identify underlying issues and deliver clear technical recommendations.
  • Lead escalated technical investigations, working directly with development engineering teams where required.
  • Conduct network health checks, technical audits and serviceability assessments to identify potential risks and improvements.
  • Produce high-quality customer-facing documentation including MOPs, RCA reports, technical procedures and troubleshooting guides.
  • Investigate interoperability issues between optical transport platforms and external vendor equipment.
  • Develop Python-based automation scripts and workflows to improve troubleshooting and operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate across customer, engineering, services and sales teams to drive incidents and systematic issues to resolution.
  • Provide technical feedback that contributes directly to product, platform and service improvements.


Skills/Must Have:

  • 2–5 years' experience in technical support, network engineering or telecommunications equipment environments.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of DWDM, OTN, ROADM, photonics and optical transport technologies.
  • Experience with OME 6500, RLS and/or Waveserver platforms.
  • Strong capability troubleshooting complex fibre-optic and optical transport systems.
  • Experience diagnosing system-level faults across telecommunications transport and switching equipment.
  • Understanding of optical transport and data communications protocols.
  • Experience developing Python scripts, automation or technical workflows.
  • Strong technical documentation skills, including MOPs, RCA reports and operational procedures.
  • Excellent customer-facing communication skills with the ability to work directly with senior technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to take ownership of complex problems, prioritise incidents and drive issues through to resolution.


Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with optical network management, monitoring and orchestration platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with optical test equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting interoperability between multiple network equipment vendors.
  • Exposure to large-scale carrier, service-provider or enterprise optical networks.
  • Experience performing network health checks, technical audits and proactive fault analysis.
  • Strong background in complex technical problem solving and root-cause analysis.
  • Experience working across engineering, development, services and customer teams.
